20 April 2010 – Go Travel Insurance

Go Travel Insurance has provided this guide relating to your insurance cover due to UK airline passengers experiencing significant disruption and flight cancellations after an ash cloud from a volcanic eruption in Iceland has affected air transport.

A Guide For Go Travel Insurance Policy Holders Prior To The Volcanic Eruption:

Customers who are stranded abroad and trying to get home

If you are stranded abroad due to the flight cancellations related to the Iceland volcanic ash incident, Go Travel Insurance would like to assure customers that policies will be extended automatically without charge, until such time you are able to return to the UK.

If your flight is delayed or cancelled, there are strict EU rules in place, which mean that the airline is obliged to supply meals and refreshments, along with accommodation if an overnight stay is required and you have a confirmed return booking.

Travel Delay, Missed Departure and Cancelled Flights

Go Travel Insurance customers who purchased before the volcanic eruptions and who have plans to travel out of the UK in the next few days, will need to check with their airlines, tour operators and agents in the first instance.

When you purchased your flight you entered into a contract with the airline and therefore if they cannot offer you an alternative flight, you can claim against the airline for any new purchased flights.

The Consumer Credit Act (CCA) may well help here so customers should check with their card issuer if they booked their flight using a credit card.

Cover under the Go Travel Insurance policy for cancellation, delay and missed departure only extends to specified risks. As the situation does not fall under any of the definitions, no cover will apply.

Airline Information

Most airlines are offering refunds or alternative flights for affected travellers

As of 9am 19th April - The following airlines have indicated the stance below:

  • EasyJet is offering those with cancelled flights a full refund or free transfer to another flight on the same route within 30 days of the original flight date.
  • Ryanair has informed passengers who were booked to travel on one of the cancelled flights that they can transfer to the next available flight free of charge or apply for a refund on their unused flight(s) at the airport ticket desk, online or through the airline's call centre.
  • British Airways is offering a full refund, free rebooking on another BA or BA franchise flight within two weeks of the original flight.

Cancelling your Go Travel Insurance policy

If you have purchased a Go Travel Insurance policy, you are eligible to cancel the policy and request a full refund providing that you have not yet travelled, your travel dates have not passed and you have not made a claim within 14 days from the date of purchase.

If you are within the 14 days of purchasing your Go Travel Insurance policy, but have not travelled due to your flight being cancelled, then you should firstly refer to your airline, tour operator/agent for an alternative flight and then Go Travel Insurance will happily amend the travel dates on your policy at no charge.

If you are outside the 14 days, Go Travel Insurance will happily amend the travel dates of your policy providing you have not already travelled or made a claim.

To amend your policy travel dates, please contact us on 0844 482 0879

Guide for Go Travel Insurance Policies Purchased Since The Volcano Eruption

As with all insurance policies, you are unable to insure for an event or incident after it has been announced or happened. Therefore, customers buying Go Travel Insurance since the volcanic ash incident will not be covered for any claims relating to it. All normal cover, terms and conditions of the policy still apply.
