Travel Tips: Part 3 - 10 tips to keep your valuables and baggage safe on holiday
You've been looking forward to your holiday for weeks; you've got a suitcase full of new beach ware, not forgetting your ipod and camera in your hand luggage. The last thing you want to do is lose something or have it stolen.
For a happy and stress free holiday follow our 10 tips to reduce the risk of losing your luggage or having your possessions stolen.
Identification
1. Attach durable luggage identification tags to each of your bags and use a colourful tag or marker so that no one will pick up your bag by mistake.
2. Put additional identification details inside your suitcase including your mobile telephone number, hotel or destination phone number and email address. This can help an airline or carrier trace you if your baggage is mishandled.
3. When securing your suitcase consider investing in a lock that can be opened by the TSA (Transportation Security Administration) using a "master" key. This may prevent any damage occurring if your baggage is opened for inspection.
What not to pack
4. Do not place money or valuable items in your suitcase; carry these in your hand luggage and keep it with you at all times.
5. When packing liquid items ensure these are packed in watertight plastic bags to prevent leakage.
Keep it with you
6. Never leave your personal possessions unattended, even for a short period of time. Don't be tempted to leave your possessions with someone you've met at the airport or your hotel; they might have disappeared by the time you get back!
7. Cash should be carried on your person at all times. Consider using a money belt that can be hidden under your clothing for greater security.
Use a safe
8. When not in use, store cash, travellers cheques, passports and tickets in a safe or safety deposit box in your locked accommodation.
Keep it out of sight
9. Never leave money or valuables in an unattended parked car and do not leave any personal possessions in your vehicle overnight.
10. When parking your vehicle during the day ensure it is securely locked and all items are hidden in the boot.
