Going skiing or snow-boarding? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Tourists looking to combine a holiday on the slopes with watching some of the best winter sports athletes compete may be advised to take a trip to Whistler.

From April 12th, the Canadian ski resort will host the 2007 Telus world ski and snowboard festival which will witness a variety of events in each discipline.

With over 150 athletes looking for a share of CAD $100,000 (£43,691) in cash and prizes, competition in events such as the super pipe and big air is bound to be tight.

However, those ski and snowboard spectators looking to take a more active role in proceedings will have the chance to take part in the events via a unique lottery format.

Athlete manager Lindsay O'Brien said: "Uniting pros and amateurs through a mixture of invitational and open fields makes the festival an event for all levels of riders.

"It provides an exciting opportunity for up and comers to size up their skills against the pros and help to launch their competitive careers and have a ton of fun in the process."

Meanwhile, those wishing to be slightly less active while on their break will be able to attend a series of outdoor concerts and art and photography exhibitions.

Last week, ski tourism officials in New Mexico were inviting skiiers and snowboarders to take the slopes as resorts in the area enjoyed about 15 feet more snow then they experienced this time last year, reports First Track.
