British and Irish holidaymakers have voted the US as their favourite holiday destination.

In a poll conducted by Lonely Planet, 9.9 per cent of respondents named the States as their number one holiday hotspot, followed by Australia with 9.1 per cent.

It would appear that the US' popularity is set to continue for at least another year, with 9.5 per cent revealing their next overseas break is likely to be taken across the Atlantic, the Telegraph reports.

The results represent a slight fall in fortunes for previous favourite Australia, which was the third most likely destination for holidaymakers on this side of the pond.

Backpacker insurance is likely to be an important part of the holiday preparation for those planning to tour the US, which counts the Los Angeles, Las Vegas and the New York City among its premier attractions.

Long-haul and all-inclusive deals are widely reported to be more popular this year, owing in part to the strength of the euro against the pound.
