Let's face it, when it comes to Halloween the Americans just do it so much better. So this year forget memories of trick or treating at suburban semis and head to Greenwich Village for America's largest Halloween celebration.
British cynicism may sneer at a giant Halloween party, but the event is listed in "100 things to do before you die" and Festivals International declare it as the best place in the world to spend October 31st.
Some two million people attend the massive parade every year, which features 50,000 participants. Ghoul-lovers watch as puppets, jugglers, break-dancers and stilt walkers travel the one-mile long parade route.
Every year the organisers pick a theme for the festivities, and this year they have gone back to its pagan roots with a Celtic communal fire. Villagers would traditionally gather around a village hearth to mark the end of autumn, each taking embers from the communal fire to warm their homes through the winter. Costumes this year will celebrate this theme of community and warmth.
The parade takes place along Sixth Avenue from Spring Street to 22nd. The event is free to watch, but with two million expected, people should obviously get there early to ensure a good view.
