A number of American and British travel magazines have put Sri Lanka at the top of their lists for 'must see' places.
Vogue's October issue called the island one of the winter's 'coolest tropical getaways' while Conde Nast Traveller rated it 11th in last month's 2005 Readers' Travel Awards.
The island has come back remarkably since the devastating tsunami and its tourism market and infrastructure bear witness to the fact that it is business as usual and more people are visiting the island than ever before.
Some hotel and tourism officials have said that in some ways the tsunami helped because it enabled them to upgrade their facilities and modernise.
Udaya Nanayakkara, chairman of the Sri Lanka Tourist Board said: "It was a tragic year for us in 2004, but tourism is an extremely resilient industry and we are working hard to ensure that the buoyancy will continue."
