Travel insurance 'recommended for short-haul tourists'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Britons going away on a short break are being reminded of the need to take out sufficient travel insurance.

According to Find.co.uk, tourists going on a weekend holiday to a city on the continent should not use the European Health Insurance Card (EHIC) as a replacement for full travel insurance cover.

Although the EHIC grants residents of the European Union (EU) access to free emergency medical attention in the event of accident or illness, it was claimed that this does not mean British tourists will receive the same of level of treatment as they would with the NHS.

It was also claimed that taking out travel insurance can help provide cover should tourists lose their baggage or face flight delays or cancellations.

Marketing director Kate Marsden added: "Travel policies vary dramatically, so it is essential that you buy appropriate insurance which matches the value of your belongings, the cost of your holiday and the type of activity you will be engaging in."

She also suggested that the cheapest travel insurance policies are "rarely best" in terms of providing adequate cover.

Earlier this week, American Express advised consumers to consider taking out annual travel insurance as Britons go on an increasing amount of short-haul flights.
