Travel insurance is a 'holiday essential'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Millions of British holidaymakers are putting themselves at risk by travelling without insurance, it has been revealed.

A recent study by Sainsbury's Bank found that one-in-four Brits are planning to holiday without travel insurance this year, with 2.5 million people claiming they cannot afford the premiums due to the current economic situation.

It emerged that those most likely to travel without insurance were holidaymakers aged 55-64.

Steve Johnson, head of insurance at Sainsbury's Finance, said that it was concerning to see so many people travelling without insurance.

"It's a false economy to do without it and should be regarded as a holiday essential, just as important as packing your passport.

"Although in the current climate people are understandably looking at ways to reduce their outgoings, insurance is one thing that should not be omitted."

Mr Johnson warned that those travelling without insurance would be liable to foot their own medical bills and would not receive compensation if their luggage were lost.

Meanwhile, financial group Defaqto last week advised holidaymakers to apply for European Health Insurance Cards, in addition to taking out a travel insurance policy.
