Holidaymakers are being advised of the need to observe drink driving limits of the country they are staying in while they are away.
According to American Express Insurance Services, even those who are not driving should be aware of relevant legislation as being involved in an alcohol-related incident could invalidate their travel insurance policy.
Marketing manager Joanne Field said: "This is the acid test to determine whether an insurer will pay a claim for an accident or injury when the medical staff has advised that its causes have been alcohol related."
Findings from the company also reported that tourists could find medical expenses running into thousands of pounds if they are without cover or if their travel insurance claim is denied due to excess alcohol.
The firm reported that the cost of an air ambulance from the Canary Islands to Britain could be up to £16,000 with scheduled flight with a doctor escort returning from the Mediterranean accounting for £4,000.
Earlier this week, Richard Mason, director of insurance for moneysupermarket.com, claimed that travel insurance is "vital" for those looking to cover the costs of medical treatment, cancelled flights and lost currency.
