Travel insurance for over 65s is "not hard to find if you look in the right place", a representative from Saga has suggested.

Paul Green, head of communications at the group, said older holidaymakers should not be put off by the fact that some companies impose upper age limits on policies and, instead, should shop around for a deal which suits them.

"Be clear and honest with yourself about what pre-existing conditions you have. You should also not just choose your policy based on price but also consider if it covers any pre-existing conditions," he commented.

According to a study by Age Concern last year, around 92 per cent of travel insurance policies impose age restrictions.

However, Mr Green added that insurance companies have been making progress in terms of calculating holiday risks.

"Insurers now have a better understanding and improved systems - they are more sophisticated on how they rate older ages," he continued.
