British holidaymakers are planning to cut down on the tips they leave this year, new research has suggested.

A poll carried out by the Post Office revealed that tourists are tightening their belts this year, with 36 per cent of people admitting that they do not plan to leave tips when dining out on holiday.

It emerged that the UK's most generous tippers hail from the east of England and Scotland, where over half of people regularly leave gratuities.

And it seems that it's our friends across the pond who are feeling the pinch the most, with American waiters complaining that many British holidaymakers fail to leave the 15 per cent tips that are expected.

Paul Paz, a spokesman from Waitersworld – an organisation representing hospitality staff across the US – commented: "It is a long-standing American standard that tipped employees are only paid the current minimum wage so gratuities are vital here."

In other news, a recent poll by Adfero researchers revealed that 75 per cent of Brits plan to take a holiday this year, despite the current credit crunch.
