Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

With an increasing number of Britons starting to plan their summer holidays, those looking to take their pets away with them are being advised to act immediately.

According to Halifax Pet Insurance, it can take up to six months to complete the documentation process for a 'pet passport', which sees tourists' animals be vaccinated and microchipped for identification purposes.

Spokesperson Vicky Watson said: "All owners who are considering taking their pets abroad on holiday should act now. The pet passport process will take six months to complete so by starting the stages now it will allow the pet to accompany the family on holiday in August."

She added that, in a similar way to travel insurance for human holidaymakers, taking out pet insurance for consumers' animals will cover vet fees in the case of a medical emergency.

As is also the case with travel insurance, the amount of cover the pet can receive is reflected on the policy taken out by the owner.

Tourists are also advised to make sure their animals have sufficient legal documentation allowing them to leave the country.

A report by moneysupermarket.com revealed that about one in four ski and snowboard tourists do not have adequate travel insurance when they head off on the slopes.
