Holidaymakers are set to be able to fly from Britain directly to Lille for the first-ever time.

From April 23rd, bmi regional will offer flights from Leeds Bradford airport to the French city for six days out of the week.

However, a number of connections from Edinburgh and Glasgow to the Yorkshire airport will allow Scottish tourists to take advantage of the service.

Managing director Stewart Adams said: "This is an important addition to the bmi regional European flight network and underlines our commitment to serving Leeds Bradford Airport and the surrounding region."

Mr Adams added the direct link would help strengthen each city's business and tourism sectors.

Previously all tourists wishing to travel to Lille would have to fly to Paris, before using a rail or road connection service.

One-way fares are reported to start from about £59.

According to a study by the Civil Aviation Authority, bmi regional is Britain's most punctual airline.

Earlier this month, the air operator announced it was to launch a daily flight service from Aberdeen to Brussels.
