Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Those taking a gap year and embarking on foreign travels this year should ensure they are well-prepared and not vulnerable to risks.

A recent report in the Telegraph listed a number of ways in which backpackers can stay safe when travelling.

Top tips for gap year travellers include booking at least one night's accommodation in every country that you travel to and being wary of pick-pockets in crowded places.

Backpackers are also advised to set up a secure internet account and email important documents and contact details to trusted family and friends.

Visiting a GP at least six weeks before travelling is also essential, with many backpackers travelling to countries that require visitors to be vaccinated.

Backpacker specialists STA Travel also recommend planning a tight budget before travelling and taking out a travel insurance policy.

Earlier this month STA named Rio de Janeiro in Brazil as one of the fastest growing backpacker destinations of 2008.
