'Too many tourists have insufficient travel insurance'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Holidaymakers should look to avoid low-cost travel insurance policies, it has been suggested.

According to research released last week by Defaqto, the terms and conditions behind many of the cheaper policies available are so confusing that many tourists end up taking out a travel insurance policy which does not suit their needs.

Author of the report Brian Brown said: "Consumers are being let down by the insurance industry, which has made travel policies jargon-heavy to the point that the only thing they can easily compare is price."

He added that as a result "too many people are now travelling abroad with inadequate cover".

Mr Brown claimed that the government and the insurance sector needs to do more to increase knowledge of the need to take out sufficient travel insurance cover.

Last week, the Civil Aviation Authority urged holidaymakers who choose to book their accommodation and transport separately to ensure that they take out adequate travel insurance.
