According to Tesco Personal Finance, savvy travellers can save hundreds of pounds by taking some time to plan beforehand.
Rachel Cutler, head of Tesco travel insurance, commented: "Holidays dont have to be expensive, with a little planning and some clever cost-cutting you can still enjoy a happy half term together without fearing for your finances even during the credit crunch.
"One way to cut costs is to arrange airport transfers before travelling and to avoid exchanging money at the airport.
Holidaymakers are also advised to buy pre-paid international calling cards, rather than use costly mobile phones.
