Young people are using their gap year breaks as an opportunity to decide what to do in the future, it has been claimed.
Tom Griffiths, founder of Gapyear.com, suggested that many students face a "paralysis of choice", with more than 60,000 courses available to them.
Employers often like the fact that backpackers have taken time out to focus on what they want to do in the future.
"That is head and shoulders above those who have literally gone straight out of university, and picked a degree that has got absolutely no relevance to their lives," Mr Griffiths added.
Meanwhile, the Telegraph reported earlier this year that many people are using their redundancy packages to take gap year breaks and readdress their career options.
Instead of viewing unemployment as a setback, the newspaper claimed that some are viewing it as an opportunity to escape the doom and gloom.
