Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Despite the credit crunch and the rising cost of fuel, holidaymakers can still find ways to save cash, according to money saving expert Martin Lewis.

Speaking to GMTV, Mr Lewis said Brits could save money by booking last-minute deals and taking time to research every possible option.

Haggling can also lead to package price cuts, with Lewis estimating that the average holidaymaker could save around 15 per cent by persuading their travel agent to slash the price of their trip.

"Once you've found the deal that you want; write down all the details and call all the late booking travel agents you can (you'll find lots listed on teletext or in the Sunday papers classified sections) tell them what deal you've got and get them to beat the price," he said.

When it comes to foreign currency, using a debit card abroad can often be a costly mistake, with some providers adding a pound to every transaction. Instead, Lewis recommends that holidaymakers opt for a credit card which has a good deal on foreign transactions.

According to a report by Opodo in 2006, the average Briton takes £400 spending money on holiday with them.
