One of South Africa's premier golf tourism areas is to be used to help the country attract visitors in the run-up to the 2010 football World Cup, it has emerged.
According to Calvyn Gilfellan, acting chief executive of Cape Town Routes Unlimited (CTRU), the Western Cape's golf tourism facilities will help make the region a "must see" for visitors over the next three years, reports the Herald.
He said: "There are around 57 million golfers worldwide - no less than one per cent of the world's population - who have access to about 31,000 golf courses.
"It's a huge market that is available to destinations that have the right offering."
Meanwhile, the region's Garden Route area has been named the 2006 Golf Destination of the Year for Africa and the Middle East by the International Golf Travel Market.
Featuring courses designed by Jack Nicklaus and Ernie Els, Mr Gilfellan claimed that a number of golf events will take place over the coming years to make "the province one of the world's premier tourism destinations".
Last week it was announced that construction had begun on a golf course designed by Tiger Woods.
