Everyone is familiar with the "upturned bucket" school of sand sculpture, and no doubt most of us have put our hand to it at some distant point in childhood. Sand sculpture as practised by the professionals is however quite a different thing, to which Denmark's Sand Sculpture Festival is testament.
Held all summer and up until October 25th, the Danish town of Sondervig is home to the festival, which sees experienced sand sculptors mastering their craft and building castles up to 33 feet high.
Children may be especially enthralled by the castles, dragons and other assorted sculptures that rise out of the beach, but this is no barrier to other age groups being equally thrilled.
You may even want to partake, in an effort to dispel your past record with a mere plastic spade and bucket; visitors are able to help make the sand sculptures and gain an insight into how it's really done.
Sondervig, a seaside holiday town that offers a range of local activities, is situated on the North Sea coast. This year it is celebrating, along with the rest of Denmark, the fact it is the famed fabler Hans Christian Andersen's 200th birthday.
