Budget airline Ryanair said it is considering the introduction of a "fat tax" for passengers who are very overweight.
In a recent poll carried out by the airline, 29 per cent of people voted in favour of such a charge.
Ryanair is now asking passengers to vote on how such a tax could be implemented, with possible options including a charge for male passengers who weigh more than 20 stone and females exceeding 15 or penalising those with a high body mass index.
Stephen McNamara, a spokesman for the airline, said that a tax would only be imposed on "really large passengers" and not those who are just a few pounds too heavy.
"These charges, if introduced might also act as an incentive to some of our very large passengers to lose a little weight and hopefully feel a little lighter and healthier," he added.
In other news, Skyscanner has revealed that the most popular destinations for Brits travelling abroad for the May bank holiday weekend include Alicante, Malaga and Palma.
