Quarter of tourists 'unsure about travel insurance'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

About a quarter of holidaymakers do not know what their travel insurance policy covers, a new study indicates.

According to research conducted by HSBC, some 27 per cent of consumers with travel insurance will not look to check their level of cover before they leave Britain.

Head of current accounts Michael Oliver said: "Few people would dream of taking their family on a holiday abroad without travel insurance, but many are potentially leaving themselves and their loved ones exposed by not ensuring that they are adequately covered by the policy they have."

The study also revealed that some 55 per cent of tourists are uncertain about any specific exclusions to their policy.

Mr Oliver added that those who choose to rely on travel insurance supplied from their current account or credit card could find that their cover is "less than expected or has special conditions attached".

Last week, Malcolm Tarling from the Association of British Insurers recommended that those looking to purchase travel insurance should take the time to shop around for a policy which offers the most relevant cover for their needs instead of focusing on costs.
