Puerto Rico is looking to increase its levels of British tourists, it has been revealed.

The Caribbean island is aiming to instigate direct flights to Britain by the 2009-10 holiday season as part of a bid to boost tourism levels from across the continent.

Meanwhile, Puerto Rican officials are set to visit Britain this week to meet with tour operators and travel companies, reports Travel Mole.

Executive director of the Puerto Rico Tourism Company Terestella Gonzalez Denton told the publication: "We are targeting the European markets - particularly the UK - and will be inviting tour operators and wholesalers to come and experience our product."

She added that tourism levels have grown by 17 per cent over the last 12 months, as the country implements a five-year plan aimed at improving hotel and transport services.

Earlier this week, Xu Jing, an official for the United Nations World Tourism Organisation, claimed that China will become the world's third most popular holiday hotspot by 2008, overtaking the United States.
