Portugal is one of the world's top golfing destinations, it has been claimed.

According to the Association of Independent Tour Operators (Aito), Portugal is a prime destination for activity holidays.

An Aito spokesman described the Algarve as a particular favourite with Britons and said that the area was well-equipped to deal with golfing enthusiasts.

"The Algarve has one of the densest concentrations of high-quality golf courses in Europe and the area has developed an infrastructure to cater specifically for golfing enthusiasts – from dedicated staff handling golfing queries at hotels to shuttle bus services taking guests to courses," he explained.

For those hoping to take a golfing holiday off the beaten track and experience some local culture at the same time, Aito suggests the resorts of Estoril and Sintra.

Portugal is home to 70 high-quality golf courses and last year scooped the International Association of Golf Tour Operators Award.
