Going back-packing? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

For those seeking an active bargain break, travel experts and tour operators are increasingly suggesting Peru to holidaymakers.

A number of new holidays in the South American nation have been springing up and the country is also proving a hit with surfers.

Peru has a large variety of waves and the largest left hand point break in the world on its north coast. Surfing is a popular sport in Peru and the current female world champion, Sofia Mulanovich, is Peruvian.

Trips to the country's interior are also a great draw and those including a visit to the famous pyramid at Machu Picchu are available with a range of companies for a variety of different abilities and fitness levels.

Ancient Peru was the seat of several Andean civilizations, most notably the Inca Empire, captured in 1533 by Spanish conquistadors. The country declared independence from Spain in 1821, defeating Spanish forces in 1824.

A democracy since 1980, Peru has witnessed some recent economic growth and is currently under the presidency of Alejandro Toledo. With a population of almost 28 million, Peru features a host of dramatic landscapes, from beaches, to mountains and jungles, and the famous Inca temples.
