Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Consumers are more likely to make pet insurance claims as summer approaches, it has been claimed.

According to Tesco Personal Finance, the warm months will see more Britons take their animals outside which could leave pets at risk of sunburn, bites or getting items stuck in their throats.

Spokesperson Monica McCormack pointed out there was a six per cent rise in insurance claims between May and June last year which "could have been a result of the hot weather starting earlier".

She said: "We really see an instance of higher claims when the sunny weather comes in and people are outside more with their dogs."

Ms McCormack added that there also tends to be a rising amount of road traffic accidents involving pets over the summer.

Earlier this month, a Churchill Insurance spokesperson suggested that not only are holidaymakers who go away this summer getting travel insurance for themselves before departing, they are also making sure that their pets are covered.
