'Over 65s may struggle to get travel insurance cover'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

As flights and cruises to destinations around the world are becoming increasingly cheap, it's never been easier to book a trip away.

And although a few days in the sun may sound like an inviting prospect for many retirees, people over the age of 65 often struggle to find holiday cover, claimed travel insurance journalist Michael Challiner.

Although people now tend to live longer and lead healthier lifestyles, when it comes to travel insurance, he stated, many older holidaymakers struggle to get that all important cover.

Mr Challiner also reported that although older people are less likely to lose their luggage than the average traveller, their belongings are often more expensive.

He added that over 65s also struggle to get cover as they are "much more liable to make a medical claim and the claim size is well above average too".

Older travellers may also run into difficulties as some insurers will only provide cover if they stay in booked accommodation rather then with friends or family.

However, older tourists may be glad to know Go Travel Insurance offers single trip cover for adults up to 99 years of age.

The travel insurance company claims: "We assess our travellers individually and offer travel insurance cover to suit all needs."

Last week, Travel Insurance Review reminded tourists of all ages that they should make sure they understand their policy before going on holiday.

The travel insurance publication claimed that often holidaymakers just skim over the policy overview, the document which outlines what their travel insurance covers and how much it costs.
