'Over-50s advised to get travel insurance'

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Those over the age of 50 are being warned by the Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) to ensure they have sufficient travel insurance cover before setting off on holiday.

The announcement comes as the FCO reports that nearly 70 per cent of over-50s claim they are more adventurous on their holidays compared to a decade ago.

Meanwhile about a fifth of tourists in this age group are reported to have taken part in adventure activities such as abseiling, bungee jumping and rock climbing while on a recent holiday.

However, 65 per cent of over-50s were reported to have not taken out any travel insurance for their last trip, with 47 per cent of consumers believing that they did not need it.

Steve Jewitt-Fleet from the FCO's consular communications team said: "As we have noticed an increasing number of over-50s swapping relaxing holidays in Marbella for treks in the Himalayas, we would like to see more over-50s being better prepared for their trips to ensure they are fully covered for any eventuality."

Earlier this week, those heading off piste in the search for snow while on a skiing or snowboarding holiday were advised by American Express to get adequate travel insurance cover.
