Older travellers 'right' to face increased travel insurance costs

Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Travel insurance firms are justified in increasing costs for tourists with certain medical conditions and those over the age of 65, it has been argued.

According to a spokesperson for Milsom Howard, increasing the price of travel insurance for older travellers helps to keep premiums down for those judged to be of a lower risk of making a claim.

The representative added: "It is not a charter for choosing a group of people and deciding to charge more for pure profit."

It was suggested that it is unfair to force those under 65 and without a medical history to "pay higher premiums to subsidise those who do".

But he added that, on the whole, travel insurance is "a low cost product" with increased competition of competitively priced cover keeping premiums down.

Last week, figures released by Macmillan Cancer Support indicated that some 40 per cent of tourists who have been treated for cancer have either been refused cover or faced higher travel insurance costs than those who have not had the disease.

However, travellers will be glad to know that Go Travel Insurance offers a range of competitively priced travel insurance policies covering those up to the age of 99 as well as those tourists with various medical conditions.
