The opening of Madrid's fourth terminal of Barajas International airport early in 2006 is expected to double its passenger capacity.
Some 70 million passengers a year could now be accommodated after £3.4 billion was spent on the new terminal.
With current traffic limited to 78 aircraft per hour, the new terminal is expected to increase capacity to 120 per hour.
These new developments coincide with the completion of Madrid's ambitious enlargement project for the Museo del Prado's.
Madrid's Museo del Prado is famous for its dazzling collection of 7,000 paintings from all over Europe, including Belgium, Holland, Spain and Italy, and is ranked as one of the world's top five galleries.
Pieces from artists such as Belgium's 15th century Heironymous Bosch are some of the world famous artworks at the Prado.
Others include Spain's Velázquez, Goya and El Greco, as well as exhibitions from Italy's Raphael, Titian and Caravaggio.
