Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Buying a travel insurance policy that covers medical expenses is particularly important for those embarking on long-haul trips, it has been suggested.

Malcolm Tarling, a spokesperson for the Association of British Insurers, explained that Britons travelling to countries such as the US, could face huge medical bills if they travel without adequate insurance.

Figures from FirstAssist Services show that the cost of air ambulance transport in the US could be as much as £45,000.

"Different countries do present different risks. The further afield you travel - i.e. outside Western Europe - the more important medical expenses cover is," Mr Tarling commented.

He added that statistically, travellers over the age of 70 were the most likely to claim for medical expenses.

Official figures from the Foreign and Commonwealth Office revealed that over 8,000 Brits required assistance in the US last year, while 602 UK holidaymakers were hospitalised in Greece.
