Backpackers are heading to Russia in growing numbers following changes to visa legislation by the country's government, it has emerged.

Russia is now more accessible for travellers looking to visit the country independently, rather than in an organised tour, and good exchange rates mean that tourists are taking advantage of the opportunity, according to the Russian-InfoCentre.

With the number of tourists heading to Russia independently on the increase, travellers might be advised to consider backpacker insurance to protect their belongings with financial cover.

The Russian visa and immigration specialists added that the country has seen a significant increase in the number of hostels available to backpackers, reported by the Worldwide Visa Bureau.

Moscow, Saint Petersburg, the Trans-Siberian railroad, Sakhalin Island the Caucasus Mountains and Lake Baikal are among the most popular tourism spots in Russia, according to The Russia Channel.
