The popular holiday hospot of Lanzarote could become one of Europe's top golf destinations, it has been claimed.

According to Discover Lanzarote, the island is setting itself up to become a major contender for destinations such as the Algarve and southern Spain.

One of the island's most popular courses, Costa Teguise, was opened in 1978 and comprises a practice green, restaurant, driving range, pro shop and equipment rental centre.

There is also an 18-hole course in the bustling resort of Puerto del Carmen, which was designed by Jack Nicholas' previous partner Ron Kirby.

Plans are also in place to introduce new courses in Playa Blanca and Puerto Calero.

Situated off the west coast of Africa, Lanzarote enjoys warm temperatures all year round and has an annual rainfall of just 5.5 inches.

The island is also home to numerous attractions including Timanfaya National Park.
