Australian tourism officials have outlined a plan to bring state, territory, regional and local tourism activities together for the first time.
The whole Outback region would be promoted as one destination under this new plan, allowing intrepid backpackers to travel on Outback trails between states and receive the same standards of hospitality, security and quality.
Desert Knowledge Australia (DKA) coordinator Mike Crowe also said that from visitors' perspectives, there is only one Outback, even though technically there are five or more.
"Each state or territory has promoted its own Outback, which stops at the border," he said.
The jewel in the crown of the Australian Outback is Uluru, a 345-metre high monolith 9.4 kilometres in circumference.
Uluru, also known as Ayres Rock, forms part of the Uluru-Kara Tjuta National Park.
While climbing the sacred Aboriginal site is not encouraged, hiking around the rock is an amazing alternative, as is camping nearby to appreciate the rock's breathtaking amber hues at sunrise and sunset.
