Homeowners are being advised to ensure that they have adequate insurance cover to help guard against accidental damage.
According to figures released by Abbey, consumers incur some £93.4 million worth of damage in their home each year - an average of £172 per household¬ - due to their neighbours.
Head of insurance marketing Prasad Shastri said: "Not all damage caused to people's homes by their neighbours is malicious, in many cases this type of damage is accidental.
"However there are often misconceptions about whose insurance is to be used to claim for it."
Mr Shastri added that although a neighbour or visitor may be at fault for a window breaking, it is "always the policy holder of the damaged home that will need to submit a claim".
In addition to a sufficient travel insurance policy, holidaymakers could be particularly advised to ensure they have adequate home cover.
A study by Halifax Home Insurance indicated that over a million tourists return home every year to find their property damaged.
