From November 1st many parts of Asia will be lit up by one of the most spectacular festivals anywhere in the world.
Diwali, or the festival of lights, is one of the most important events in the Hindu calendar and sees lamps and candles adorn villages, towns and cities across India.
The lamps are lit in rows to celebrate the return of Lord Rama, and signify the victory of good over evil; light over darkness.
Along with the proliferation of coloured lights across India, visitors to the country during Diwali will also experience some of the most diverse festivals and celebrations that it has to offer.
While travellers enjoy the festivities though, the event also has a much more down to earth aspect to it for many Hindus. The main day of celebration is seen as a particularly favourable time for traders and businessmen, who mark the occasion with the less than thrilling act of returning their accounts while the rest of the family exchange gifts.
