Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

British holidaymakers have been warned that withdrawing cash from foreign machines can be a costly exercise.

On average, those using a debit or credit card abroad will be charged £4 per transaction, TravelMole reports.

A recent study by MoneyExpert.com found that British holidaymakers will spend around £7.1 billion while on holiday this year - making around 63.93 million withdrawal transactions.

A spokesman for the site said that although cash withdrawals can be a safe and convenient method of "getting hold of your money", holidaymakers should ensure that they shop around for a good deal.

"Many people are likely to be unaware of the charges they can incur for withdrawing cash abroad. If money is tight this year we highly recommend that travellers do some research and find the best deal available," he commented.

According to a report by Opodo in 2006, the average Brit spends around £400 per week while on holiday.
