Firstly, lone travellers can save money by booking with a company that does not charge single supplements - such as Solosholidays.co.uk and Soiltarhols.co.uk. For those who can be flexible with their destination and departure times, Lastminute.com also has a singles "bargain" travel section, which caters for Brits holidaying alone.

Other ways to save cash include volunteering with a charity, teaching English and working as au pair.

For those in search of adventure, delivering a car in the US could be the perfect holiday option. An increasing number of companies will now employ holidaymakers to transport cars between states - paying only for the petrol they use.

According to a recent study by Mintel, around ten per cent of Britons are attracted to the idea of "exploring the world on their own".
