The cost of taking a break is set to rise in light of rocketing oil prices, a tour operator has predicted.

Holiday company Thomas Cook warned its 2009 packages are already retailing at higher prices, warning the average cost of a trip is going to rise seven per cent.

Furthermore, the firm continued, people are likely to cut their holiday spending as the strength of the euro hits their purses.

In addition, Thomas Cook stated the slowing economy is affecting the disposable income available to would-be holidaymakers.

Chief executive Manny Fontenla-Novoa stated: "For the first time in a long time supply is maybe less than demand."

Earlier this year, Teletext published its report the World's Best Value Breaks, highlighting Bulgaria as the country offering travellers the most cost-effective break.

The report found visitors could enjoy a three-star hotel for less than £50 and a three-course meal for £7.
