While debate continues on the merits of evolution versus intelligent design, why not head to the place that started the whole controversy in the first place?
Charles Darwin famously conceived "The Origin of the Species" after visiting the unique environment of the Galapagos Islands and now travellers can explore the 13 islands for themselves, courtesy of a cruise aboard the San Jose boat.
The islands' remoteness means that much of the wildlife is endemic to each area, resulting in the famous natural variations observed by Darwin. The isolation also means that few species have learnt to fear man, allowing visitors to get up close and personal with a host of rare animals.
Iguanas, sea lions, dolphins and whales are just some of the animals frequently seen by tourists, with the Giant Galapagos tortoise being the most prized sighting.
Formed out of volcanic rock in the Pacific Ocean, virtually all the land area has been designated as a national park, meaning that the islands will remain an unspoilt attraction for the more imaginative traveller.
A cruise is the ideal way to access and travel around the islands, located 1,000 miles off the Ecuadorian coast.
