The British Airports Authority (BAA) has announced it is to re-develop Terminal 3 at Heathrow Airport.

Under the move, the terminal is set to provide a four-lane drop off area, offering up to 40 per cent additional capacity which should allow holidaymakers to be able to check in faster.

Chief executive for BAA Heathrow Tony Douglas claimed the move is "an important step towards transforming Heathrow into a modern gateway for the UK".

He added: "The changes will significantly improve our passengers' experience of Terminal 3 as we prepare for the terminal being occupied by different airlines from 2008."

There will also be a new drive through check in facility for upper class passengers on Virgin Atlantic flights.

Work is set to be completed by the end of the year.

BAA added that the £4.3 billion development of its Terminal 5 project is 90 per cent complete and is on track to open in March 2008.

When complete Terminal 5 will increase Heathrow's annual passenger capacity by up to 95 million passengers.

According to the Airport Transport Users Council, charter airline flights were at their most punctual during 2006.
