The government should increase the amount it spends on "green" transport, according to one environmental organisation.

A spokesperson for Friends of the Earth (FOE) – a group which campaigns against environmental damage – suggested that the government increases the amount is spends on high speed rail lines, as opposed to supporting the expansion of existing airports.

"Aviation is one of the fastest growing sources of climate changing emissions in the UK and no amount of carbon offsetting will change that," she commented.

FOE also maintains that investment in green travel could make it cheaper for Britons to holiday in Europe, especially given the rising cost of oil.

However, the call for change may fall on deaf ears. A recent poll by lobby group Flying Matters revealed that many people are too concerned about the cost of living to worry about the environment.
