Golf has driven a rise in tourism numbers in one area of the United States, it has been revealed.

Sheboygan County, Wisconsin, was reported to have generated some $345.1 million (£175.2 million) in tourism revenue over the course of 2006, an increase largely attributed to the US Women's Open and PGA Championship hosted in the region over recent years which have attracted golf tourists, reports the Sheboygan Press.

Keith Moses, general manager of the Blue Harbor Resort and Conference Center in Sheboygan, said: "To get them [golf tourists] here, that's obviously important, but it's just as important we get them back to show off Sheboygan and what else we have to offer."

He added that the area also has "a great golfing community".

Meanwhile, the county could be set to welcome a rise in golf tourists as the Whistling Straits hosts the US Senior Open next month, with the PGA Championship set to return in 2010 and 2015 in addition to the 2020 Ryder Cup.

Golf tourists looking to perfect their swing in the United States may also wish to visit Osprey Meadows at the Tamarack Resort.

Last month, the resort was named by Golf Digest as the best public access golf course in the state of Idaho.
