Those looking to get down to a little world music in a friendly environment should check out San Francisco's World Music Festival, held from September 26th to October 16th.
Celebrating its sixth anniversary this year, the festival brings together musicians from all over the world to venues around the Californian city to play for an enthralled audience.
The main highlight of the festival this year is the world premiere of the Nowruz Project, specially commissioned for the event, which aims to make an artistic statement about global peace.
Taking place on October 2nd, the evening presents musicians and artists from the Middle East and Central Asia observing the pre-Islamic concept of Nowruz. Artists include Persian ney master Hossein Omoumi and Kurdish filmmakter Nizamettin Aric.
Other highlights include a special evening of world music DJs, including those from San Francisco, an evening dedicated to female singers from around the world and a Chinese world percussion concert.
While in San Francisco and in a musical mood, you could check out the city's ongoing gay music scene. This includes the San Francisco Gay Men's Chorus and the San Francisco Performing Arts Library & Museum (PALM) where you can listen to crooning from such past masters as Leonard Bernstein and Cole Porter.
