Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Food tourism is the next big thing in world travel, according to new research conducted in the UK.

A broad survey of holidaymakers in the UK from World Travel Market found that over half of us (53 per cent) say that eating traditional food on holiday is either a "very important" or "important" component of our trip.

Eating local food while on holiday was enjoyed by 86 per cent of Britons in total.

So great is our love of local cuisine that 83 per cent of us would actually miss hotel meals that we have already paid for through our package in order to sample the local delicacies.

Fiona Jeffery, group exhibition director of World Travel Market, said: "Food tourism today is where eco-tourism was 20 years ago; people are starting to take an interest.

"We believe it is representative of a new and growing phenomenon within the international industry," she added.
