Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Music fans are shunning British festivals in favour of foreign events in warmer climes, it has been suggested.

Ross Purdie, editor of Virtual Festivals, said music fans like to have the option of turning their festival experience into "a bit of a holiday" and suggested that the high cost of UK festival tickets may be putting people off.

"Tickets abroad tend to be cheaper than here and also, it's a different experience. Most people have done all the big ones here – Glastonbury, Reading, V Festival – and are now turning a festival experience into a bit of a holiday," he explained.

This year's Glastonbury Festival failed to sell out in advance for the first time in fifteen years and Northern Ireland's Tennant's Vital Festival was cancelled last week, with organisers citing increased competition as the reason.

Mr Purdie suggested that following five years of steady growth, the UK festival market may have "hit its peak".
