The Foreign and Commonwealth Office (FCO) has announced it has amended its advice for British travellers to Fiji.

Although the FCO is no longer advising tourists to avoid all non-essential travel to capital city Suva, Britons in the country are still being advised to exercise caution as the country is still under a state of emergency.

Claiming that the Pacific Islands country still carries the risk of civilian unrest, travellers are recommended to "avoid all military or political rallies and large gatherings of people and avoid openly discussing political issues".

Meanwhile, visitors to Fiji are advised to register with the British High Commission and to keep themselves informed of breaking developments.

Tourists were also warned about a number of robberies, assaults and thefts taking place across the country, particularly on the main island of Viti Levu.

A state of emergency was declared in December after Prime Minister Laisenia Qarase's government was subject of a coup, the fourth Fiji has witnessed in the past 20 years.
