British Airways (BA) is urging chancellor Alistair Darling to shelve his plans to raise flight taxes.

Speaking yesterday, on the eve of the Budget, BA chief Willie Walsh said an increase in air passenger duty will penalise hard-working families and slow down economic recovery.

Air travel from the UK is already the most heavily-taxed in the world and the government seems determined to heap "more misery" on passengers, the airline stated.

This year's Budget is due to be unveiled at lunchtime today.

"The government's own figures show that UK airlines already meet their environmental costs, so there can be no 'green' justification for these additional taxes," Mr Walsh added.

In other aviation news, low-fares carrier easyJet has announced plans to introduce three new routes from Luton Airport.

From July, the airline will offer regular flights to Mahon, Milan and Montipellier.
