The Dominican Republic has reported it witnessed a surge in tourism during 2006.

Last year the Caribbean island welcomed some 83,916 visitors, a rise of about six per cent from the 79,257 tourists it received in 2005, reports Travel Daily News.

Minister of Tourism Yvor Nassief told the publication: "We're very pleased that more and more people continue to discover Dominica and all the attractions and scenic wonders our island has to offer."

He added tourists who were coming to the Dominican Republic were seeking "culture, eco-adventure opportunities and new experiences from their vacation destination".

Mr Nassief also claimed October had seen a peak in tourism as the country hosted the World Creole Music festival.

The United States was reported to have driven the tourism growth to the island, however the amount of tourists coming from Europe over the year rose by 9.5 per cent.

According to a study by American Express Insurance the number of Britons going on foreign holidays is to increase by five per cent over the course of 2007.
