Going on holiday? – Get a great deal on travel insurance

Those looking to carry out home improvements are being advised to make sure their property is covered by their insurance policy.

As Britain approaches its busiest DIY period, the British Insurance Brokers' Association (Biba) is warning consumers to ensure any renovations are covered before picking up a hammer or screwdriver.

Head of technical services Peter Staddon said: "People should treat any improvements and renovations to their home as an investment and should protect them as such."

Mr Staddon added that as home improvements can "make a huge difference to the cost of our properties and quality of life" it is crucial consumers make sure any changes are incorporated by their insurance policy.

According to Biba, Britons' DIY spend is set to reach £57 billion over the next six months.

Overall consumers are reported to spend on average £6,400 a year on their homes every year.

Last month the FSA warned a number of motor, home and travel insurance companies to stop using their advertising campaigns to mislead consumers into thinking they will be able to make savings on their insurance claims.

However travel insurance saving claims were reported to be of a higher standard than the home and motor insurance industries.
